Governing bodies have a wide range of strategic responsibilities covering all aspects of school life.
Why do schools have governing bodies?
Every school has a Governing body which represents the interests of the children, local community and wider public in the running of the school. School governors work with the staff and local authority to help secure the best possible education for the children in the school.
What is the function of a governing body?
There are three core functions that a governing body requires as reflected in the Ofsted criteria:
1. Setting the vision, ethos and strategic direction; engaging stakeholders; and ensuring that statutory duties are met
2. Hold the Headteacher to account for teaching, achievement, behaviour and safety; to challenge and strengthen leadership; to contribute to school evaluation
3. Ensure financial solvency and probity with effective management of financial resources, including the Pupil Premium and Sports Funding, to raise standards
